From 19–25 May, the Rolex Vol­cano Race 2012 sets sail within the Rolex Capri Sail­ing Week 2012 to its sec­ond edi­tion in the Tyrrhen­ian Sea – through the Pon­tine Islands and around the Aeo­lian Islands includ­ing the active vol­cano of Strom­boli. Organ­ised by the Inter­na­tional Maxi Asso­ci­a­tion (IMA) in con­junc­tion with the Yacht Club Gaeta E.V.S. and the Yacht Club Capri, the Rolex Vol­cano Race 2012 off­shore race for mono­hull Maxi yachts will debut this year as a two-legged race.

Start­ing at the his­toric town Gaeta on sun­day, 20 may, about twenty-two yachts will chal­lenge at leg one with approx­i­mately 100-nautical miles to Capri. Sail­ing teams from eleven coun­tries as the Sir Peter Ogden Jethou (GBR) sail­ing crew spon­sored by Gaas­tra, the DSK Pio­neer Invest­ments team with Danilo Salsi (ITA), the Nilaya yacht crew (BEL) with Filip Bal­caen and Bouwe Bekking as tac­ti­cian as well as the Y3K wally yacht team with Claus-Peter Offen (GER), will face the alto­gether 400-nautical miles com­pet­ing with the Greek demigo ‘Aeo­lus’, ‘Guardian of the winds’ of Homer’s Odyssey – the UNESCO World Her­itage Aeo­lian Islands, where leg two is tak­ing the fleet around, are named after him. From the magic island Capri, the crews are head­ing for the main event with 300-nm.: Along the active vol­canic island Strom­boli, the island Vul­cano and Alicudi sail­ing back to Capri, where Rolex will host a cel­e­bra­tion din­ner and award cer­e­mony at La Can­zone del Mare, an exclu­sive sea­side venue, on fri­day. Today the pres­ti­gious and top-class Caribbean sail­ing regatta Les Voiles de St. Barth 2012 with Gaas­tra Sports­wear as the offi­cial part­ner starts: At the third edi­tion run­ning from 2nd to 7th april in the French Caribbean sail­ing par­adise Saint Barth, this year more high-class yachts and inter­na­tional sail­ing teams than ever will chal­lenge. The sail­ing classes have been extended to six in total, within which the Les Voiles de St. Barth 2012 Entries will rise the chal­lenge fac­ing the Caribbean trade winds: Maxi, Clas­sic and IRC 52, Spin­naker 1 & 2, Non-Spinnaker as well as Rac­ing Mul­ti­hull. To the power house entries in the Maxi Class belong this year amongst oth­ers the Hoek 115′ Fire­fly with Skip­per Mark van Gelderen, Swan High­land Breeze Yacht with Albert Keu­larts, Ram­bler 90 with George David, Sojana Yacht with Peter Har­ri­son and also the rel­a­tively new Nilaya Yacht with Filip Bal­cean as skip­per and sail­ing expert Bouwe Bekking as tactician.

Another high­light at the exclu­sive Saint Barth sail­ing event: The 52′ yawl Dorade, called by many the world’s most promi­nent yacht of all time. Launched in 1930 and designed by Olin Stephens, Dorade influ­enced nearly all devel­op­ments in yacht design for the next three decades. Pur­chased in 2010 by Matt Brooks, she will now set sail on her chal­leng­ing maiden voy­age at Voiles Saint Barth 2012 in the clas­sic boat class. The dream­like St. Barth sail­ing con­di­tions obvi­ously have spread the word: The extended sail­ing classes and the num­ber of inter­na­tional entries big­ger than ever to the third edi­tion speak for them­selves. It’s not sur­pris­ing, that Les Voiles de Saint Barth with Gaas­tra as the offi­cial part­ner is called the shoot­ing star amongst all Caribbean sail­ing regat­tas! In the Maxi Class, breath­tak­ing boats as Pete Harrison’s Sojana, Baltic Nilaya, Swan High­land Breeze, F-class Fire­fly and Reichel/Pugh Ram­bler Yacht will chal­lenge this sea­son. Bouwe Bekking, last year on board of the High­land Breeze Yacht, will be the tac­ti­cian on the ‘Nilaya’ this april at Les Voiles de St. Barth 2012 – a rel­a­tively new boat, that won at the Super Yacht Cup Palma and at Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup Sar­dinia in its first year in the Super Maxi Divi­sion.
