Sailors for the Sea, Clean Regattas

Sailors for the Sea as a nonprofit-organziation edu­cates and engages the boat­ing com­mu­nity in the world­wide pro­tec­tion of the ocean and coastal waters, which is more impor­tant than ever due to the increas­ing pres­sure of global use. David Rock­e­feller, Jr., an avid rac­ing sailor and deeply com­mit­ted to the envi­ron­ment, founded Sailors for the Sea as a direct result of his work on the Pew Oceans Com­mis­sion that iden­ti­fied pro­found and alarm­ing ocean health issues. Sailors for the Sea wants to strenghten the marine ecosys­tems by sup­port­ing sailors world­wide, sail­ing clubs and sail­ing regat­tas bring­ing them on Green Sail­ing Stan­dards with dif­fer­ent projects and pro­grams: The nation­wide ‘Clean Regatta Pro­gram’ assists and cer­ti­fies yacht clubs and regatta orga­niz­ers as pro­vid­ing clean sail­ing events that min­i­mize impacts upon our oceans. The Clean Regatta Pro­gram wants to sup­port these impor­tant efforts as an inde­pen­dent third-party and a green expert the pro­fes­sional way. Fur­ther­more, Sailors for the Sea offers more core pro­grams like the Ocean Watch Essays, the Cer­ti­fied Sea friendly pro­gram, the Team 11th Hour Rac­ing Project and the Rainy Day Kits for Envi­ron­men­tal Edu­ca­tion, that have been cre­ated by lead­ers in the field of marine and envi­ron­men­tal sci­ence and edu­ca­tion. Gaas­tra rec­om­men­da­tion: Éric Tabarly, Ein Seglerleben

Our sec­ond rec­om­men­da­tion is Éric Tabarly, Ein Segler­leben (‘A Sailor’s Life’) of Jacque­line Tabarly and Daniel Gilles, pub­lisher Delius Klas­ing. This 232 page book pays homage to one of the most out­stand­ing sailors in sail­ing his­tory. Born 1931 in Nantes, Tabarly gets his first sail­ing lessons already with the age of three. With his Pen Duick II he chal­lenged in 1964 at the Transat­lantic regatta OSTAR from Ply­mouth to New­port and con­quered the pre­dom­i­nantly british sail­ing elite. Thence­for­ward, his sail­ing career began at the Sydney-Hobart Race and with many records on Atlantic– and Pacific cross­ings. Trag­i­cally, Tabarly had an acci­dent in june 1998 on his jour­ney on the occa­sion of the 100th birth­day of his first boat, the PEN DUICK, and stayed lost…The book con­tains 165 black-and-white pho­tos and 209 coloured illus­tra­tions and can be ordered at Ama­zon or directly at Delius Klas­ing, pub­lisher.

‘After gain­ing expe­ri­ence in the world of ready-to-wear cloth­ing man­u­fac­tur­ers, I started work­ing in the fash­ion sec­tor in 1982. In 1984, I launched the Bad Boys brand, which was acquired by another com­pany 2 years later. I con­tin­ued to work for the com­pany as Cre­ative Direc­tor until 1994, after which I had the oppor­tu­nity of mak­ing a cre­ative con­tri­bu­tion over a period of two years to relaunch­ing the McGre­gor Fash­ion Group. In 1996, I started work­ing for var­i­ous Euro­pean brands as a prod­uct con­sul­tant, in the course of which I came into con­tact with Gaas­tra, where I have been work­ing since 1997 as Cre­ative Direc­tor respon­si­ble for brand con­cept and development.

I am pas­sion­ate and dri­ven when it comes to ensur­ing that Gaas­tra con­tin­ues its suc­cess­ful track record of growth and devel­op­ment as a lead­ing Euro­pean fash­ion brand with a nau­ti­cal sig­na­ture. This involves all parts of the busi­ness on a day-to-day basis. We are quite ambi­tious and always search­ing for new chal­lenges and cre­ative oppor­tu­ni­ties. I travel a lot in an effort to develop a global per­spec­tive and also do my utmost to con­tin­u­ally inspire and ‘chal­lenge’ my colleagues.’

The Melges 32 World Cham­pi­onship, the TP52 World Cham­pi­onship, the Pal­maVela Regatta, the Tro­feo Princesa Sofia and the Copa del Rey: The Real Club Nau­tico de Palma is the main yacht club of Palma (Mal­lorca) and orga­nizer of many famous and big sail­ing events. With the spon­sor­ing sup­port of Gaas­tra in this year again, Gaas­tra will par­tic­i­pate as the Offi­cial cloth­ing sup­plier with Gaas­tra Sports­wear and pro­fes­sional Gaas­tra Pro Sail­ing Gear dur­ing the jubilee of the 30th edi­tion of the Copa del Rey Audi-Mapfre, that will take place from july 30 to august 6 this sum­mer on the Balearic Island. On the occa­sion of this jubilee, Gaas­tra has cre­ated a spe­cial Gaas­tra Copa del Rey Poloshirt 2011. The Real Club Nau­tico de Palma (RCNP) was already founded in 1948 and enjoys a good rep­u­ta­tion world­wide due to its pro­fes­sional organzi­a­tion of many sail­ing events, its mod­ern jet­ties and fully equipped yacht club in the heart of the bay of Palma with dry docks, mod­ern offices, a library, leisure rooms, bars and restau­rants, ter­races, swim­ming pools, gym­na­sium and a sail­ing school. The care of envi­ron­ment is an impor­tant task for the RCNP as well: That’s why the port of the Real Club Nau­tico de Palma achieved the Eco­port envi­ron­men­tal cer­ti­fi­ca­tion in 2004 for its good per­ma­nent prac­tises of sav­ing water, selec­tive sort­ing and emp­ty­ing bilges and sep­tic tanks the envi­ron­men­tally friendly way to save the clean­li­ness of Balearic waters.
